Much was said about Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli ahead of the Australia series. In Australia, it was Rohit who won the Player of the Series award with a total of 201 runs. Against South Africa, it is Kohli who has delivered, with two hundreds and an unbeaten, sublime fifty to his name.
Performance. That’s what ultimately matters in sport, and both of these legends have stood up for India. It was Rohit who set up the run chase beautifully tonight and even helped Yashasvi Jaiswal get into his groove. And then, it was Kohli who sealed it with some brilliant stroke play.
Anyone who has watched the games closely will know that both of these players still have the hunger. The way Rohit fielded today was spectacular – diving around and stopping certain boundaries, much to the delight of his teammates. And Kohli was brilliant throughout. That’s what it’s all about: hunger and commitment.
As the year winds down, Indian fans will know that Ro-Ko will surely be around in 2026, and chances are they’ll make a real push for 2027. The quality is there for everyone to see, and as long as these two remain, stadiums around the cricketing world will stay full.
India win the series 2–1, marking yet another white-ball series victory under Gautam Gambhir. Unlike in red-ball cricket, where Gautam hasn’t produced consistent results, his white-ball record is impeccable. After Shukri Conrad’s unfortunate ‘grovel’ comment in Guwahati, it’s worth pondering what the ODI series scoreline would have been had India won more than one toss.
The focus will now shift to the format that matters most over the next two months, with the T20 World Cup around the corner. And in T20 cricket, India has an abundance of riches. It would, in fact, be an upset if South Africa manage to push India,. Suddenly, things in Indian cricket don’t seem that bad anymore. Kohli and Rohit can now enjoy a lovely Christmas, knowing they have given their fans plenty of gifts over the last month or so.
