Just one night away from the blockbuster clash, India wrapped up their optional training session at DY Patil Stadium before Shafali Verma fronted the media, her first press interaction since returning to the senior side for the Women’s Cricket World Cup semi-final. Thrust straight into a knockout after nearly a year away from ODI cricket, the 20-year-old displayed her trademark confidence, insisting she is mentally ready for the challenge.

Confident Return After a Year Out

Shafali last played a 50-over international in 2024, but sees no reason for hesitation now.
“It’s not new for me. I’ve played semi-finals before,” she said. “It’s all about keeping myself mentally clear and confident… I’ll stay calm and believe in myself. I will do well, 200%.”

Making the Format Switch

Shafali has been in T20 mode this year, but believes her preparation has put her in a strong position.
“Switching formats isn’t easy, but I batted long in the last two days. I’m getting the touch I want,” she said with a smile.

“God has sent me here to do something good”

The youngster was drafted in as a replacement for the injured Pratika Rawal.
“I got the message two days ago while with my Haryana team,” she revealed. “It never feels good when a player gets injured, but God has sent me here to do something good. My family is very happy.”

Role Clarity and a Warm Welcome

After being dropped due to consistency issues, domestic returns have earned her another shot.
“Everyone in the team told me to just play my game and not panic,” she said. “I’ve been given full freedom.”

On Facing Australia in a Knockout

Shafali knows the battle well.
“I’ve played against them many times. They’ll come hard, but we’ve prepared well,” she asserted.
Her tactical key? “If we don’t give them wickets, they can panic.”

On India’s Outlook and Mindset

“It’s a knockout, we must give 200%,” she declared. “Everyone looked good in the nets. The environment is very positive.”

Open or Middle: “Super Ready”

Asked about her preferred position:
“I can play anywhere. Confidence is important. I’m super ready for the role the team wants.”
