FIFA has approved the expansion of the Women’s World Cup from 32 teams to 48, starting from the 2031 edition. The decision was made during a virtual FIFA Council meeting held on Friday.

Speaking about the move, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said: “The chance to benefit from the tournament to develop their women’s football structures. This decision ensures we are maintaining the momentum in terms of growing women’s football globally.”

FIFPRO, the world’s largest players’ union, also welcomed the decision but shared a concern, stating: “In principle we welcome the expansion of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, as it reflects the global growth of the women’s game. However, the support of players depends on inclusive decision-making and cooperative planning that respects all stakeholders.”

The 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup will still be played with 32 teams in Brazil

“It is critical that the global development of women’s competitions goes hand in hand with improved labour conditions and the advancement of players, as well as development further down the pyramid. This is the only path to true sustainability, expansion, and progress,” it further added.

From 2031, the tournament will follow a 12-group format. With this, 40 more matches will be added, increasing the total number of matches from 64 to 104. The tournament’s duration will also be extended by one week.

Meanwhile, the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup will still be played with 32 teams. It is set to take place in Brazil and will be the 10th edition of the tournament. Brazil will also become the first South American country to host the Women’s World Cup.
