The proposed hybrid model by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for the upcoming Asia Cup has faced resistance from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The hybrid model suggests four matches to be played in Pakistan while India’s matches are held at another venue, preferably the UAE. However, the BCCI has expressed dissatisfaction with this arrangement.
During an informal discussion in Ahmedabad, BCCI Secretary and ACC Chairman Jay Shah conveyed the board’s stance on the matter. The meeting, which took place during the rain-interrupted final of IPL 2023, involved representatives from Afghanistan and Sri Lanka, while Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chairman Nazmul Hassan couldn’t attend due to personal commitments. No concrete decision was reached during the meeting.
Afghanistan and Sri Lanka supported the BCCI’s position against the hybrid model, citing concerns about the impact on players’ scheduling and the disapproval from broadcasters. The discussions focused on Pakistan’s hybrid hosting model, with key stakeholders from various cricket boards participating except for Pakistan.
Although no final decision has been made, the BCCI is persisting with the demand for a neutral location, and further negotiations with the PCB are expected. However, the lack of resolution at this stage raises doubts about the possibility of the Asia Cup taking place as planned.
