Written by Vaibhav Tripathi

Yashasvi Jaiswal, poised to make his debut in the first Test against West Indies in Dominica, may have garnered headlines for his thrilling T20 batting in recent times, but is well aware of the unique place that the longest format occupies in the game. On the eve of the Test, Jaiswal spoke of how getting his Test cap would be the culmination of a long-cherished dream.

“I was very happy,” he told the BCCI’s podcast of his call-up to the Test side. “For me, Test is the true form of cricket. When I was growing up, I always wanted to play Tests for India. When I heard that I was going to be a part of the Indian team, it was a pleasure. For me, I always wanted to be in a Test team. As well as the T20I side.”

Jaiswal’s exceptional performance in domestic cricket, particularly in the Ranji Trophy while playing for Mumbai, got significant attention from many around the globe. He has accumulated a total of 1,845 runs from 26 innings in first-class cricket, at an impressive average of 80.21.

Jaiswal’s good form was rewarded on Tuesday, July 11, when Indian captain Rohit Sharma confirmed that he would be making his debut. Jaiswal will partner Rohit at the top of the order, with Shubman Gill moving down to No.3.
