Mitchell Marsh has expressed his satisfaction over the positive developments in his career during 2023, emphasizing his comeback to Test cricket, marriage, and now the role of captain in T20I cricket. The 31-year-old all-rounder has been a reliable performer for Australia in recent times. He conveyed his readiness to lead the team and handle responsibilities for as long as the team requires his leadership.
“We’ll get through South Africa and see how we go. I’m available to captain for as long as the team needs me. We’ll see where it all ends. It’s certainly been a crazy year. Throw in getting married, it’s been a good one,” Mitchell Marsh as quoted by cricket.com.au.
Following Aaron Finch’s retirement from international cricket earlier this year, which left the T20I captaincy position vacant, the selectors have appointed Marsh to fill this role. Marsh’s first assignment as captain will be leading his team in the upcoming three-match T20I series in South Africa. Additionally, due to Pat Cummins’ injury, Marsh will also lead the side in the 50-over matches.
“I think the most important thing I’ve learnt about leadership is staying true to yourself. Hopefully I’m a good captain. If not, I won’t be in the job for very long. That’s okay, I’m just looking forward to the opportunity,” added Marsh.
Although Marsh has previous captaincy experience with the Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League (BBL), his track record in this role is less than impressive with only six wins in 20 games.
