Former opener Virender Sehwag has projected current Indian captain Rohit Sharma to once again secure the title of the highest run-scorer in this year’s World Cup, expressing his belief that Rohit will significantly impact his team’s performance.
“I think lots of openers because India has good wickets, so openers will get more opportunities. I think if I want to pick one, I think Rohit Sharma. There are a couple of names, but I know I’m Indian and I should pick Indian, so Rohit Sharma. I’ll pick Rohit Sharma, because when World Cups comes, his energy level, his performance goes up. So I’m sure that and this time he’s a captain also. So I’m sure that he will make a difference and he will get a lot of runs,” Sehwag told ICC.
Rohit showcased his exceptional skills in the 2019 World Cup, reigning supreme in the run charts and registering an impressive tally of five centuries. He accumulated 648 runs from nine matches at an astonishing average of 81, leading India to the semi-finals.
Rohit’s history in the 50-over World Cup is noteworthy. With a record of 978 runs in 17 innings, he holds an impressive average of 65.20. His record comprises six centuries and three half-centuries, all while opening the innings for India. These runs were amassed at a strike rate of 95.98, underscoring his ability to dominate at the top of the order.
