Anrich Nortje, the South African fast bowler, has been ruled out of the upcoming 2023 World Cup to be held in India with a back injury, RevSportz understands. The 29-year-old had also missed the 2019 World Cup with a broken thumb during a practice session. In another blow to South Africa’s chances, Sisanda Magala will miss the tournament with a knee injury.
Nortje, one of the South Africa’s mainstays, could only bowl five overs in the second ODI against Australia in Bloemfontein as he was laid low by back problems. He would have been an asset to the South African side with his hit-the-deck skills and raw pace. Nortje has bagged 36 wickets in 22 ODIs at an average of 27.27. Meanwhile, Magala has taken 14 wickets in eight ODIs at an impressive average of 25.4.
In an episode of *Backstage with Boria*, Makhaya Ntini, the Proteas legend, had pinpointed Nortje as South Africa’s key man. “Let me make a prediction here,” he said. “Anrich Nortje could well be the player of the tournament. Not simply the bowler of the tournament, but also the man of the tournament. Just one suggestion for him – he is still bowling a little short. Whoever is his coach needs to tell him to go a little fuller.
“If he does so, the talent and pace that he has, Anrich can run through any batting line-up during the World Cup. I will not be surprised if he wins South Africa a few matches single-handedly.”
Subsequently, Cricket South Africa announced Andile Phehlukwayo, the experienced all-rounder, and Lizaad Williams as the duo’s replacements. Phehlukwayo has played 76 ODIs, with 89 scalps to his name. Wayne Parnell and Ottniel Baartman were the other contenders.
“Commenting on the setbacks, Rob Walter, South Africa’s limited overs coach, said, “It’s hugely disappointing for Anrich and Sisanda to be missing out on the 50-over World Cup. Both are quality players that add immense value to the Proteas. We sympathize in their omission and will continue to provide all the necessary support as they work towards their return to competitive action.
