Kane Williamson, the captain of New Zealand, expressed his eagerness to make a comeback during the upcoming ODI World Cup, which kicks off on October 5. Williamson emphasized his focus on rehabilitation while avoiding unrealistic return targets.
“It would be great. Naturally, you want to be back playing when you are fit and ready, sooner rather than later,” Williamson was quoted as saying by The Daily Star.
“You hope that ends up being around that World Cup time, but I’m still being very focused on the rehab day-to-day and not wanting those targets to stretch it to a point where you take a backward step,” he added.
Williamson, who will lead New Zealand in the upcoming World Cup, suffered a knee injury during the first match of the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) in March, which initially raised concerns about his availability for the World Cup. Nevertheless, in recent times, the 33-year-old has shown significant improvement in his recovery.
The Black Caps were engaged in ODI tours of England and Bangladesh as part of their World Cup preparations. However, Williamson’s injury has hampered his readiness as it prevented his participation in any of the matches against England and Bangladesh.
