India’s journey in the World Cup has been nothing short of spectacular. As they gear up to face the Netherlands in Bengaluru in their final round-robin match, the Men in Blue are riding high on an eight-match winning streak. They have not only secured the top position in the league stage for the third consecutive time in ODI World Cups, but also left an indelible mark with their extraordinary performances.

At the helm of this impressive squad is Rohit Sharma, a charismatic leader known for his remarkable cricketing skills and easy-going nature. Under his captaincy, the Indian team has not only excelled on the field but also cultivated a strong sense of bonding that sets them apart from the previous lots.

The word that comes to mind when observing this Indian team is ‘camaraderie’. The players, both young and experienced, share a deep sense of unity and brotherhood which is evident during practice sessions and on the field during a match.

Rohit’s leadership style is a crucial factor in fostering this sense of togetherness. While he is a fierce competitor during matches, he knows how to create a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere within the team. Laughter and light-hearted chats are common occurrences among the players and support staff in and around the practice nets. A sense of belonging is palpable.

Rohit takes time out to engage with his teammates, providing guidance and clearing any doubts or tactical concerns they might have. Whether it’s discussing strategies with Shreyas Iyer to tackle short-pitched balls, sharing insights with Shubman Gill on ground shots and shot selection, or offering advice on line and length to Mohammed Siraj, Rohit’s contributions go beyond his batting prowess.

Virat Kohli, the former captain and one of the two players in the dressing room to have tasted triumph in the 2011 World Cup, is another key figure in the team’s dynamics. While Kohli is known for his intensity on the field and during training, he also knows how to lighten the mood. He shares moments of laughter with youngsters like Ishan Kishan, Gill and Iyer, providing a valuable source of inspiration.

T Dilip, the fielding coach, also deserves recognition for his contributions to this cohesiveness. Despite having no first-class playing experience, Dilip has become a central figure in the set-up. He has introduced the popular ‘fielder of the match award’. This has elevated the importance of fielding efforts, motivating players to give their 100 per cent and save every run. Videos of these moments, posted on BCCI.tv, have resonated with fans and players alike.

The team management recognises the significance of keeping the players refreshed during this long tournament. Most training sessions have been optional due to constant travel, allowing players to recharge. The management’s decision to go on the Triund trek in Himachal Pradesh after the victory against New Zealand demonstrated their commitment to team cohesion and well-being.

This conscious effort to boost team chemistry began during India’s West Indies tour. Players bonded over dinner and pool sessions, fun activities and games. The goal was to infuse energy and positivity required for a monumental event like the 50-over World Cup, which comes once every four years.

After the 2019 World Cup, stories of ‘rift’ between Kohli and Rohit made headlines. In 2023, Kohli and Rohit have even started travelling in the same car! Their celebratory embrace after India’s victory against Bangladesh went viral, epitomising the team’s spirit.

The team’s selfless approach is evident in the actions on the field. KL Rahul missed out on a century against Australia and he ensured that Kohli reached that mark against Bangladesh. Jadeja’s selfless act in defending the last ball of an over to bring Kohli back on strike to equal Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 centuries was a testament to the team’s unity. When Kohli missed out on the ton, Jadeja looked gutted. When Kohli finally reached the milestone in Kolkata, every player stood up and lauded the batting maestro.

What makes this team unstoppable is not just individual talent, but their collective will to share the moment, take a bullet for each other, and keep winning for India. Their sole goal is to lift the World Cup and end the 12-year wait for the coveted trophy.

In this World Cup, they are more than a team; they are a family.
