Team India’s victorious streak came to a halt as Australia secured a six-wicket win in the ICC World Cup 2023 final, amidst a fervent home crowd at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
Travis Head was the star-performer with a ton, while Marnus Labuschagne proved to be the support cast. The pace bowlers also used the slow nature of the wicket to their advantage to pick up wickets.
Here are the best reactions from the game:
“Congratulations to Australia on their sixth World Cup win. On the most important day of the biggest stage, they played better cricket. Hard luck Team India, just one bad day in an otherwise sterling tournament can be heartbreaking. I can imagine the agony of the players, fans and well-wishers and what they must be going through. Losses are a part of the sport but let us remember that this unit gave their all for us throughout the tournament,” said Sachin Tendulkar.
“Mighty mighty heartbreak last night. Everyone in the team had several days to remember during this campaign and special mentions to Virat Kohli, Mohammed Shami, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah. However I can’t help but applaud the giants of modern day cricket “Australia”. What they did on the field yesterday was just unbelievable. Congrats on their 6th World Cup win,” said Ravichandran Ashwin.
“So proud of this Australian team and crew. So much goes into achieving what they have. To win another World Cup in the manner and circumstance they have is one of the finest victories in our sporting history I reckon. Time to celebrate,” said Adam Gilchrist.
“Congratulations Australia for becoming the world champions. Aussies Aussie Aussie oi oi oi,” said Wasim Akram.
“As I’ve said we are a champion team irrespective. So chin up boys….Many many congrats to Australia,” said Gautam Gambhir.
“Congratulations on this incredible journey all through the World Cup campaign. The final result may not have been in our favour, but you created unforgettable moments and made us proud! You brought the entire nation together with what you achieved as a team. Chin up and onwards to the next one! Congratulations Australia on the win – it was your day and you did well to make it happen. Well done Rohit Sharma for leading from the front and creating history and congrats on winning the man of the series Virat Kohli. Very well deserved,” said Yuvraj Singh.
“Belief and focus ingrained as habit is a key part of the Australian winning mindset. Great organized work by the team, captain, H coach and support coaches. India too were brilliant all the way through and were well led by Rohit but there can be only one winner on the day,” said Kumar Sangakkara.
“Heartbreak for India but Rohit and his men must hold their heads high for a memorable run at the World Cup. One defeat does not define this team. Congrats to Australia for being crowned World Cup champions for a sixth time, and to Travis Head for a blistering century. Rohit will be bitterly disappointed now, but he should be proud of how he and the boys played throughout the last seven weeks,” said VVS Laxman.
“Congratulations Australia. You just know how to win World Cup,” said Harsha Bhogle.
“Many Congratulations Australia on winning the World Cup. They were the best side on the day of the finals. Travis Head was simply unbelievable, was the POTM in WTC finals, won the semis for Aus and played one of the best ever innings in a WC Final and finished the game. Australia’s decision to have him in the squad despite him missing the first half of the World Cup to injury was a top decision. We can hold our heads high for the effort our boys gave throughout the tournament, they gave us many moments of joy throughout the WC, but unfortunately weren’t able to cross the line in the finals,” said Virender Sehwag.
