Hitting his way to stardom and promising bigger things

Rinku Singh has emerged as a formidable force, especially in the T20 arena, captivating audiences with his breathtaking performances. His stellar knocks have not only made him a hit with the fans, but also projected him potentially as a reliable asset for the Indian team.

Rinku’s remarkable ability to finish the innings with a flurry of shots has filled a crucial void in the T20I team, making him a strong contender for a permanent spot in the squad. His consistent contributions have sparked discussions about him becoming the finisher that the Indian team has long sought.

This presents a golden opportunity for the talented Rinku to stake his claim for the role of the finisher in the Indian ODI team also. Although the focus will be on T20s until next year’s World Cup in this format, the Men in Blue are looking for someone to accelerate towards the end in the 50-over format.

Rinku credits KKR assistant coach Abhishek Nayar for enhancing his batting abilities during the off-season at the KKR academy. The outcomes of his hard work became evident during the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy, where he gained recognition by becoming the third-highest run-scorer in the tournament.

However, it was during the 2023 edition of the IPL that this player from Uttar Pradesh catapulted himself into the limelight. His exceptional skills shone through as he amassed 474 runs in 14 games, at an impressive average of 59.25 and a strike rate of 149.52.

The defining moment of his IPL career came against Gujarat Titans, where Rinku displayed sheer heroics by smashing five sixes in the last over to win it for KKR. This extraordinary display left spectators in awe, with many struggling to comprehend the brilliance of his performance. Undoubtedly, the 2023 IPL season marked a turning point in Rinku’s career.

The ongoing T20I series against Australia has once again brought the best out of Rinku. He has performed in both matches despite not getting to play too many deliveries.

In the opening match, Rinku found himself at the center stage, steering India through a tense situation and securing victory. He not only demonstrated his batting abilities, but also showed nerves of steel — a quality needed to excel at the highest level.

Ability to thrive under pressure marks Rinku out as a key asset for the Indian team, adding a layer of dependability in critical moments. The second match showcased Rinku’s ability to hit the ball a long way. Striking at 344.44, he tore the Aussies apart by getting 31 off just nine balls, providing India the push they needed in the final overs.

Rinku’s potential as India’s premier finisher is unmistakable. The real test lies in whether he can replicate his T20 brilliance when given the chance in ODIs. The Indian ODI team has been in search of a finisher to provide that crucial late boost to complement the efforts of the top and middle-order batters.

While the names of Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav are often heard in discussions on finishers, the latter’s less-than-impressive performance in the 50-over World Cup has opened up possibilities for a fresh face.

The prospect of grooming Rinku for the ODI format could offer a solution. Following his recent exploits, the idea gains traction, opening up the possibility of Rinku emerging as a strong contender for the finisher’s role. This comes as an exciting chapter in Rinku’s remarkable journey. He has what the Indian ODI team wants. Whether he lives up to the promise, time will tell.
