India suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Uzbekistan in the second-round group stage fixture of the AFC Asian Cup 2024.

With this defeat, India’s chances of qualifying for the knockout stage almost ended. They still have a slim chance but for that they need a massive win against Syria in the last group league match.

The Uzbeks ran through the Indian defence throughout the game, although Sandesh Jhingan and his teammates succeeded in thwarting a number of attacks in the second half. Else, the scoreline would have been different.

Highlighting the difference between the two sides, India’s head coach Igor Stimac said, “They didn’t give us anything today, absolutely. On the other hand, we allowed Uzbekistan to create chances, and that was the difference. We need to accept that Uzbekistan is working much better with the underage group. That’s why the national team is becoming stronger.”

India’s defence got exposed early, just like they did against Qatar, conceding two goals within 18 minutes. Reflecting on this, Stimac said, “They looked fantastic on the training pitch. They are focussed, disciplined. The first 15 seconds or last minutes are never a convenient time to concede goals. If you allow Uzbekistan time and space, they will punish you.”

Despite all the drawbacks, the two midfielders, Apuia and Suresh Wangjam’s efforts were evident throughout the game. Igor lauded their efforts and courage, saying, “If you look, Apuia and Suresh, specifically, these games are massive for these boys because they are two guys who can make it. Absolutely. I think you all agree. I’m not in love with them. I love them for their courage, commitment, and work. Obviously, there are two players who can play at this level.”

After a solid performance against Australia in the first half, India’s defence looked shaky in the second, raising questions again about the centre-back duo of Rahul Bheke and Jhingan. “I will not be harsh on any of our players because these are the players who brought us a clean sheet and victory against Kuwait. I will try to help them get better, to raise their game.”

Amidst all this, one cannot forget the passionate fans of the Indian team. Even in the last quarter when the Blue Tigers were trailing 3-0, they didn’t give up and kept cheering the boys. Stimac felt sorry for them, acknowledging that the players couldn’t live up to expectations.

“We are very sorry for disappointing you. All I can say is sorry, guys, we couldn’t win today. However, I promise these boys will bring happiness. Let’s stick together for the final game.” The Croatian urged them to stay united for the last game against Syria.
