Rishabh Pant has received clearance from the BCCI’s fitness and medical teams to resume wicketkeeping duties for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2024, following a serious car accident in December 2022. The accident had kept the dynamic left-hander out of cricketing action since then.

Ahead of his comeback in IPL 2024, Pant said: “I’m excited and nervous at the same time. It feels like I’m going to make my debut again,” noted the star wicketkeeper-batter, upon being declared fit by the BCCI for the upcoming edition of the IPL. This update on Pant’s fitness comes shortly after BCCI secretary Jay Shah’s statement to the media, indicating that Pant had been batting and keeping well, and could be considered for India’s squad in the upcoming T20 World Cup in June.

Having last played senior cricket in December 2022, Pant endured a severe right knee injury necessitating ligament reconstruction surgery, along with a fractured wrist and ankle from the accident. With the green signal from the BCCI, Pant could make his comeback as early as March 23, when Delhi Capitals face Punjab Kings in their opening fixture in Mohali.

“To be able to play cricket again after everything I’ve been through is nothing short of a miracle,” an emotional Pant said. “I’m grateful to all my well-wishers and fans, and most importantly, the BCCI and staff at NCA. All their love and support continues to give me immense strength.”

In February 2024, Pant commenced match-simulation exercises in Bengaluru and participated in a 20-over practice game in Alur, Karnataka, supervised by NCA physios and trainers. During this period, Pant batted for the full 20 overs without discomfort, showcasing satisfactory endurance levels. While he did not keep wickets at that time, he was advised to resume wicketkeeping training in March.

Upon joining the Delhi Capitals pre-season camp, Pant said, “I’m excited to return to Delhi Capitals and the IPL – a tournament I enjoy so much. Our team owners and support staff have been by my side throughout with their full support, guidance and co-operation at every step, for which I am deeply grateful. I can’t wait to reunite with my DC family and play in front of the fans again.”

Despite facing a challenging road to recovery, Pant remained resolute in his determination to return to the field. Although doctors had initially estimated a recovery period of 16 to 18 months to regain match fitness, the 26-year-old was determined not to stay away from the game for such an extended period. Now, the entire cricketing world is awaiting Pant to take the field once again with the 26-year-old ready to lead the Delhi Capitals franchise in IPL 2024.
