Rajasthan Royals have a long-standing tradition of placing faith in budding domestic talent. The franchise’s ethos is clear, where young players are encouraged to showcase their abilities without inhibition. It allows them to express themselves freely on the field. The team’s vitality largely stems from its youthful vigour. With Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel turning in stellar performances in the recently concluded Test series against England, the onus is on them to spearhead RR forward in IPL 2024.
Since his recruitment by the Royals in 2020, Jaiswal has exhibited an upward trajectory in his cricketing journey. With each passing season, the southpaw has displayed noticeable improvement, consistently piling on runs and attracting attention by sheer weight of performance. It was in the 2021 IPL season Jaiswal first made waves, scoring his maiden half-century.
Two seasons later (2023), he exploded and amassed 625 runs to position himself as one of the premier run-scorers in the league. This included a noteworthy contribution of five fifties and a well-deserved century. Known for his aggressive approach, Jaiswal’s role as a frontline batter remains unchanged. He continues to take on bowlers from the outset with his attacking style. This season, the Rajasthan Royal’s batting lineup will depend on Jaiswal’s red-hot form.
Zubin Bharucha, the Rajasthan Royals’ Director of High Performance and Jaiswal’s mentor, commended the young cricketer’s achievements. He emphasised the importance of focusing on the basics. “Controlling the controllable while trying to extract the best results from the work we have been putting in has always been the focus,” said Bharucha on Jaiswal.
He added: “Time in the middle and strategies that have been implemented are currently being carried out. You can practise and prepare all you want until it comes down to execution, which is something Jaiswal has been doing quite well.”
Dhruv Jurel, who made a memorable impression during the 2023 IPL season when he stepped in for Riyan Parag, continued to capitalise on the opportunities, showcasing his talent with remarkable performances. Jurel’s stellar Test debut for India against England added sheen to his reputation. The Agra-born boy injects an invaluable ‘X factor’ into the Royals’ batting lineup, a role they have long sought to fill. His innovative shot-making adds a dynamic edge to his T20 gameplay, ensuring consistent success.
Yet, what truly sets Jurel apart is his insatiable hunger. This is evident each time he takes the field. Whether donning the Royals’ jersey or representing the Indian team, Jurel consistently strives to make the most of chances. His rapid ascent within the Royals’ ranks may have surprised many, but Jurel’s relentless dedication leaves no doubt about his commitment to excel.

“We have been practicing intensely the last 18 months and the main focus with Jurel as well has been how and where runs can be scored the easiest. He has been an incredibly committed student as soon as the Royals picked him and works till the point of absolute mental and physical exhaustion. That has been the key to success in the long run. The message to Jurel has been the same, which is to prepare intensely and execute the same on match day,” added Bharucha.
The mentor commented on Jurel’s development, saying, “Over the past 18 months, we’ve been engaging in rigorous practice sessions. Our primary emphasis, particularly with Jurel, has been identifying the most opportune areas to score runs. Since joining Rajasthan Royals, Jurel has shown remarkable dedication as a learner.”
Rajasthan Royals boasts a balanced squad, combining youthful exuberance with seasoned experience. Yet, the pivotal roles of Jaiswal and Jurel are unmistakable if the team aims for a coveted playoff spot in this edition of the IPL. The fresh season may prove decisive for Riyan Parag, another homegrown talent who’s been part of the Royals’ journey since 2019. As they gear up to face the Lucknow Super Giants on March 24, Royals are ready to showcase their best form and make a resounding statement.
