How is the weather like ahead of the marquee RCB-CSK clash?

PC – BCCI

If you have a bit of free time, just do a small experiment: Open your account on any of your social media platforms and post a cricket-related news. Within a few minutes, there could be a reply beneath your post – How is the weather like in Bengaluru? So, why are so many cricket fans interested in the weather factor? The reason is simple: Royal Challengers Bengaluru are taking on Chennai Super Kings in a virtual knockout at the Chinnaswamy Stadium tonight.  The subtext attached to the game is that it might potentially turn out to be the last time MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli come face-to-face in the IPL.

First things first, how is the weather? Will it rain during the course of the day? Around 30 minutes away from the stadium, if you look heavenwards, it is quite pleasant at the moment. A little bit of sun has peeked out as well and a few birds continue to chirp.

Rain was expected to lash Bengaluru on Friday, too. However, barring a few brief spells of light rain, it was quite calm. Even while travelling near the stadium, it was observed that the rains mostly stayed away. In fact, it rained more in neighbouring districts like Mandya, Mysuru, Hassan, Chamarajnagar and, Kolar. More importantly, as per the AccuWeather forecast App, the rain threat has subsided a bit in Bengaluru. The App is indicating that the heavens will open up mainly during afternoon.

Despite all the encouraging signs, it is pertinent to remember that the weather in Bengaluru is quite unpredictable, and things could again turn for the worse. In that backdrop, some 8-9 years ago, while doing text commentary, this writer had to frequently listen to a joke – never trust weather reports for Melbourne, Galle and Bengaluru. Although there are different reasons as to why those three cities have rather volatile weather.

The unpredictable weather of Melbourne is a result of its unique location. It is somewhere nestled between “southerly Arctic influences and the northerly dry and hot desert winds”. We saw a glimpse of it during the India-Pakistan game in the World Cup at the iconic MCG ground. The expected rains didn’t arrive on the match day.

Bengaluru climate is more of a subtropical highland one because of its relatively high elevation. In other words, you’re expected to notice a milder climate. The surrounding Western Ghats could also have an effect on its weather pattern. Rapid urbanisation has had its own adverse effect on the changing climate patterns of the city.

Whether the rains arrive or not, the social media is abuzz with the subtleties of Bengaluru’s weather forecasts. There is enough meme material surrounding the Bengaluru weather. The sole reason for that is CSK are going to lock horns against RCB in a marquee clash.
