Mohun Bagan Super Giants can again surprise their faithful in the upcoming transfer window, slated to start on June 9 and end on August 31. According to a close source to RevSportz, it has been confirmed that the ISL Shield Winners are keen to bring in overseas players who will take part in the upcoming Euro 2024, which starts in Germany on 15th June.
“The club has shortlisted around 40-45 top-notch overseas players, and among them, there are a few names who will be participating in the upcoming Euro,” a club official told RevSportz on Tuesday. The club official hasn’t revealed any names, but according to the source, Mohun Bagan are looking for fresh faces who haven’t played on Indian soil before. The list includes not only names from Euro-bound teams but also a few players with FIFA World Cup experience.
Not only domestic leagues and tournaments, in the forthcoming season the Green and Maroon Brigade will also play in the prestigious AFC Champions League 2 , having qualified for the league after winning the ISL League Shield. The management is aiming to bolster their squad with the addition of some seasoned overseas players. They are already in the final stages of sealing a deal with the A-League’s record goal scorer, Jamie Maclaren. Now they have set their sights on Euro 2024, starting on June 15.
This will not be the first instance of Mohun Bagan bringing players from Europe’s showpiece tournament. They signed Finland international Joni Kauko after the conclusion of the previous Euro Cup. Joni played three games as a substitute in that edition.
Additionally, Armando Sadiku, who had a decent season for Mohun Bagan last season, was part of the Albania team that participated in Euro 2016. Sadiku also scored the winner against Romania, leading Albania to a historic 1-0 win, which also marked Albania’s first goal in the European Championship.
Given previous instances, this time as well, Mohun Bagan’s management is following the same path. If the targeted players perform as per expectations, Mohun Bagan could end up signing two overseas players from the Euro 2024-bound teams.
