Debasis Sen and Ishaan Shahane in New York
The ICC T20 World Cup has commenced in New York, and as anticipated, stringent security measures have been implemented to ensure the smooth running of the tournament. Around the Nassau County International Stadium, police officials are stationed throughout the vicinity to ensure only individuals with proper accreditation are allowed near the stadium. Additionally, regular patrolling by police vehicles is conducted to monitor and secure the area.
In the match between Sri Lanka and South Africa, fans were frisked and frequent security checks at three junctures right from the entry point to the entrance of the stadium, showing the extensive measures implemented by the ICC and local police force (NYPD). Helicopters hovered above the stadium as well, providing an additional layer of security and surveillance. These aerial patrols enhanced the already robust ground presence, demonstrating the depth and seriousness of the security apparatus to ensure the safety and smooth conduct of the tournament. Police snipers have been positioned as well at unknown locations to add further security to the tournament.

Bruce Blakeman, the Nassau County executive, emphasised the extensive preparations for the event, stating, “We have been planning to do this for months, our security people are on top of it and we also have one of the largest police departments in the United States.” He also acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the state police, adding, “You have seen them help out along with the FBI, NYPD, and our village police departments. Our fire marshals, the EMTs, and the doctors and nurses who are all here have also pitched in to make sure this is a safe experience for everyone.”
While some might argue these measures might be a little excessive, one needs to understand that at the end of the day this is an ICC tournament happening for the first time in the United States of America and the safety of fans and players will always be top priority. The tournament in the US has started on a bright note and the goal will now be to ensure this tournament brings a revolutionary change in the US vis a vis cricket.
