The opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games was a mesmerising spectacle that captivated audiences worldwide. Held at the iconic Stade de France, the event began with a twist as Jamel Debbouze humorously mistook the empty stadium for a prank. The stage was then set for Zinédine Zidane, the legendary French footballer, to heroically carry the Olympic Flame from the stadium to the Seine, marking the start of a historic celebration.
In a groundbreaking move, the athletes paraded on the Seine River, greeted first by the Greek delegation passing under the Austerlitz Bridge. This aquatic pageantry set a stunning stage for the athletes’ entrance, where they became both participants and spectators in a grand 6km parade. The banks of the Seine transformed into a living tapestry of water shows and theatrical performances, celebrating the union of the Olympic Games and the City of Light.
The evening’s artistic highlights included a stellar performance by Lady Gaga, who paid homage to French music hall traditions by reinterpreting “Mon truc en plume” atop a majestic staircase, reminiscent of the Grand Palais. This was a nod to the enduring influence of French culture, bridging eras and artistic styles.

The ceremony’s emotional pinnacle came as Olympic legends Michael Phelps and Martin Fourcade unveiled the medals, each set with a piece of the Eiffel Tower, adding a unique touch of French heritage. Aya Nakamura’s powerful performance on the Pont des Arts, accompanied by the Republican Guard, further illustrated the harmony between classical and contemporary French music.
A tribute to French heroines emerged near the National Assembly, where statues of influential women like Simone de Beauvoir and Louise Michel rose from the Seine, celebrating their contributions to history and equality. The grand finale saw a galloping rider, Warrant Officer Floriane Issert, carrying the Olympic flag along the Seine, embodying the spirit of Olympism and peace.
The ceremony culminated at the Trocadéro, where Tony Estanguet, President of Paris 2024, eloquently narrated France’s enduring love affair with the Olympic Games. He welcomed the world to Paris, promising an unforgettable fortnight where the city’s cultural heritage would be on full display.
Despite the incessant rain dampening the experience, the vibrant performances and the palpable excitement of the athletes, including Indian stars like sailor Vishnu Saravanan and hockey coach Shivendra Singh, created indelible memories. This ceremony, a once-in-a-lifetime event, reaffirmed Paris’s unique ability to blend tradition, innovation, and unity in the true spirit of the Olympics.
