Indian shuttlers had an impressive opening at the Paris Olympics on July 27. Lakshya Sen secured a win in his men’s singles match, while the doubles team of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty also emerged victorious at the La Chapelle Arena. The world’s third-ranked duo, Satwik-Chirag, triumphed over the French team of Lucas Corvee and Ronan Labar in a Group C match, winning in 46 minutes.
The Satwik-Chirag pair is set to face Germany’s Mark Lamsfuss and Marvin Seidel in their next match. Expectations are high after their commanding victory over the French pair as they prepare to take on the strong German team, aiming to continue their impressive performance in the tournament. The duo caught up with RevSportz to share their thoughts on the game and the ongoing Olympics.
Early in the conversation, Chirag shared his thoughts: “Well, yes, I am happy with what happened today. Playing the first match in the Olympic Games is always tricky. We did not expect such a big crowd, so it feels even better with the Indian support. So yes, I’m happy with how the first round played out.” Satwick added, “We wanted to win no matter what and perform well. You could see I was hungrier and wanted to find that rhythm from the start, so I am delighted.”
When asked about aggression on and off the field, Chirag responded with a sense of humor, saying, “Off the field, none of us are aggressive, but while playing, we look to bring out our best.” On dealing with the noise from the crowds, Chirag remarked, “If you give a lot of importance to the noise, you might feel under pressure. However, if you don’t, it’s just like any other stadium you play in.” Satwick shared a similar sentiment, stating, “I was focused on battling myself and getting into good momentum, so I wasn’t thinking about anything else. It’s been a while since I’ve played without any injuries, so it didn’t matter to us.”

Satwick further addressed his injury issues, stating, “There is no discomfort now, and the setup in the Indian village has been excellent, offering numerous recovery options. We go there to recover all the time, so hopefully, we can make the best use of the facilities.” Chirag concluded by expressing his excitement for the upcoming match against Germany, saying, “We will prepare for the match against the Germans first, and once that is done, we will look ahead to the match against Indonesia.”
