SKannan in Paris
Neeraj Chopra, you beauty! On a sunny Tuesday morning at the Stade De France, the Tokyo Olympics gold medallist showed he was still one of the favourites for a medal in Paris, with one throw all he needed to make a statement. As he started his run, accelerated and flung the javelin, all eyes were on the electronic display board. An effort of 89.34 metres was defining. What stood out, yet again, was how Neeraj had gone full throttle with his first attempt to make the cut for the final.
The debate over Neeraj, his adductor stiffness and so on had been raging. When he decided to opt out of one big event before Paris, people thought he was hiding an injury or the niggle was serious. This one effort, where he sped and released the javelin, was a joy to watch.
Today is August 6, 2024. It was on August 7, 2021 that Neeraj had won the historic gold medal in Tokyo. Since then, he has become the face of Indian Olympic sport, each time competes, be it in Europe or Bhubaneswar. Conditions in the capital of Odisha were humid and muggy, and Neeraj came just because it was a mandatory requirement from the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) three months ago. On this day, Kishore Kumar Jena failed to live up to the hype.
Neeraj faced pressure and kept calm. We’ve lost count of the number of times he has been asked questions on whether he will get to the 90-metre mark or not. Today, his first fling was near it, which is a clear sign he is in form. Of course, what the conditions are on the day of the final will also be a factor.
Social media was on fire, the moment Neeraj came and showcased his skills. He landed in Paris with the same hairstyle. The short hair led people to believe this is a good sign, the same feel from Tokyo. Well, if superstitions and such images are important, what Neeraj did with that run, acceleration and release was dazzling. There were replays to be watched over and over again. While his millions of fans hyped things up, Neeraj has preferred to stay quiet and focus on his assignment.
Mind you, he has never promised and failed. He likes to deliver, and this 89.34 metres was even more proof of that.
