India’s senior men’s team played out a 0-0 draw against Mauritius in their opening match of the Intercontinental Cup 2024 at the GMC Balayogi Athletic Stadium in Hyderabad on September 3, 2024. This was head coach Manolo Márquez’s debut match in charge. Despite dominating possession, India struggled to break down the 179th-ranked visitors, who defended resolutely. Both teams managed just one shot on target throughout the 90 minutes.
India started the match patiently, with the Hyderabad crowd cheering every pass. The first real chance came in the 6th minute when Anirudh Thapa’s corner nearly found Chinglensana Singh at the back post. Mauritius, though not pressing aggressively, threatened counter-attacks, particularly through Jordan François’s crosses. India gifted a few opportunities, but Mauritius couldn’t capitalize.
As the first half progressed, India began to push forward, and in the 35th minute, Manvir Singh forced Mauritius goalkeeper Kevin Jean-Louis into a save. Mauritius had their best chance just before halftime, with Emmanuel Vincent’s shot flying inches over the crossbar.

Márquez made changes at halftime, bringing on Sahal Abdul Samad and Nandhakumar Sekar to inject more creativity into the attack. Mauritius responded with a stronger second-half performance, creating several chances, but India’s defence held firm.
India regained momentum in the final 15 minutes, with substitute Suresh Singh Wangjam adding energy. Despite late efforts, including a volley from Sahal and a cross from Nandhakumar, India couldn’t break the deadlock. Mauritius held on for a point, and their captain, Lyndsay Rose, was named Player of the Match.
