India’s prospects of qualifying for the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 final have taken a hit following their historic series loss to New Zealand. That also ended their long-standing invincibility on home soil. To secure a spot in their third consecutive WTC final without depending on other results, India must win four out of their remaining six matches. As they prepare for the third and final Test against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, assistant coach Abhishek Nayar backed the senior pros, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, to come good despite their recent struggles in the longest format.

Pertaining to reports that Harshit Rana had been called up for the third Test against New Zealand, Nayar, in the pre-match press conference, said, “No additions to the squad.”

Addressing rumours about the Indian team manipulating pitch conditions to favour spinners, Nayar was quite clear.“We wish we could curate the pitches, but we don’t,” he said. “Curators do. As cricketers, we play on whatever is given to us.”

There has been considerable criticism of Kohli and Rohit and their inconsistent form, especially their ability to tackle spin bowling. When asked about it, Nayar said: “I’ve seen nothing but love for them all over. When a top player, when someone who’s been through the journey, goes through a lull, a lot of times it’s about giving them their space and trusting that they will come back. They will put in the work.

“Everyone’s worked really hard, everyone wants to do well, whether you’re Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma or even someone as young as Shubman Gill. The effort is there.

“The approach is great. I feel they’re putting in the hard yards. Sometimes, sometimes you’ve got to be a little patient, even with the greatest of players, and they can have tough times. I’m pretty sure sooner rather than later, we’ll have more to praise about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma and everyone else as well. just a bit of patience.”
