In a much-needed boost for the India, star batter KL Rahul was seen batting at the nets during the team’s optional training session at the WACA on Sunday. Rahul had missed the match simulation on Saturday after being struck on the elbow by a delivery from Prasidh Krishna on the first day of the training and there was a scare. However, he returned to action, batting alongside Abhimanyu Easwaran, while facing top bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep and Ravichandran Ashwin.

The optional session saw a few key players opting out, including Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill. The latter in any case is ruled out of the first Test, starting on November 22, after suffering a thumb fracture. However, all the fast bowlers, along with spinners Ashwin and Washington Sundar, were present. Ashwin and Washington had an extended session.

Meanwhile, Gill is being closely monitored by the BCCI medical staff after suffering a finger injury during practice. Scans have confirmed a fracture. In his absence, back-up options like Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devdutt Padikkal are being kept as standbys. Padikkal’s inclusion would offer the Indian team management batting cover, ensuring that they are not short of options.

The injury concerns come at a time when India prepare for the highlyanticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The series promises to be fiercely competitive, and these last-minute setbacks are prompting careful planning and contingency measures to ensure that the team remains fully equipped for the challenge ahead.

The Australian players arrived in Perth on Sunday in groups from across the country. Pat Cummins & Co will train at the WACA on Monday.
