Australia batsman Travis Head has extended his full support to India captain Rohit Sharma’s decision to skip the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, stating that he would have made the same choice if placed in a similar situation.
Talking to reporters ahead of the Test series opener at the Optus stadium, Head emphasised the importance of player-welfare and the need for individuals to prioritise their well-being, especially when it comes to managing injuries or physical strain.
“Hundred per cent, I support Rohit’s decision. I would have done the same in the same situation,” Head observed. “We sacrifice a lot of things as a cricketer. We do live a very privileged life and we do also get looked after. But also, on the flip side, we keep missing important milestones. So, yeah, I would do the same thing if I were in his position. You do not get that time back. Hopefully, he returns at some stage in this series.”
Head further stressed on the importance of balancing between personal health/life and team commitments, noting that Rohit’s absence, while significant, was a necessary step to ensure that he could contribute effectively for the remainder of the series. “It’s a team-first mentality, but also about understanding when it’s better to step back and recover properly,” said the southpaw.
Rohit has opted out of the first Test between India and Australia, starting on November 22, after the birth of his second child.
The Australian cricket team held their first training session at the WACA on Monday, ahead of the upcoming match. Their pace trio of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood put in an intense workout at the centre nets, bowling to key batsmen like Steve Smith, Usman Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney. Both Cummins and Starc bowled some unplayable deliveries, with McSweeney, the young South Australian, at the receiving end. Nathan Lyon, who will lead the spin attack, was seen engaged in a lengthy discussion with former New Zealand spinner Daniel Vettori, likely fine-tuning his plans for the upcoming series.
Mitchell Marsh, recently a father for the first time, spent time at the nets alongside Head and Marnus Labuschagne. The Australians also focused on slip fielding, with Khawaja, Smith, Labuschagne and McSweeney working on their catching.
Meanwhile, the Indian team took a well-deserved day-off on Monday. Both teams are scheduled for a training session at Optus Stadium on Tuesday as they continue preparations for the series ahead. The intensity and camaraderie within the Australian camp indicate they are well-prepared for the challenges to come.
