Melbourne is undoubtedly one of the most exciting destinations to visit during the holiday season, especially for cricket fans, as it hosts the much-anticipated Boxing Day Test at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The atmosphere will be electrifying this Thursday, with more than 90,000 spectators expected to fill the G for the first day’s play, creating a sea of excitement and anticipation. For me, this will be my third time attending the Boxing Day Test, with my first experience being during the 2011-12 India tour Down Under.
Each time, the hype surrounding the event continues to grow. With the ongoing five-match Test series evenly poised at 1-1, the atmosphere promises to be even more charged. With two more Tests to go, fans are eager to see how the series unfolds, making this year’s match an unmissable occasion.
Cricket Australia has left no stone unturned to make this year’s Boxing Day Test a truly memorable event, ensuring that there is something for everyone. Outside the MCG, near Gate 3 in Yarra Park, a vibrant Summer Fest will run throughout the Test. This festival has been thoughtfully designed to celebrate the cultural richness of both India and Australia, bringing together food, music, and community to create an immersive experience. It’s a celebration of cricket’s global reach and the deep connection it fosters between people from all walks of life. Fans attending the Test can enjoy a variety of activities, indulge in delicious food, and engage in festivities that highlight both Australian and Indian cultures, as well as the rich legacy of cricket itself.

One of the key highlights of the Boxing Day Test this year is the collaboration between Cricket Australia and the Shane Warne Legacy. This partnership aims to celebrate the incredible impact Warne had on the world of cricket while promoting awareness about heart health. Fans can take part in free five-minute heart and health checks at self-serve stations located around the MCG. These stations, which are available throughout the duration of the Test, allow spectators to assess their health and get valuable insights. This initiative is a fitting tribute to Shane Warne, who tragically passed away at the age of 52. In honour of his legacy, 52 health-check stations will be set up around the stadium, reflecting the age he was when he passed.
The Shane Warne Legacy Health Checks, offered in partnership with SiSU Health and supported by the Victorian Government, are a great way for fans to ensure their well-being while enjoying the excitement of the match. Additionally, fans are encouraged to show their respect for Warne by wearing the iconic floppy hat, a look that he made famous on the field. This gesture is a heartfelt tribute to the cricket legend, and fans are invited to take part in a special moment at 3:50pm each day of the Test, tipping their hats in honour of Warne’s Test-cap number.
With so many engaging activities and heartfelt tributes, the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne this year is set to be an unforgettable event. Whether you’re a passionate cricket fan or simply someone looking to be part of the excitement, this year’s celebration promises to be a one-of-a-kind experience, combining world-class cricket with rich cultural festivities and tributes to one of the greatest cricketers of all time.
