Andrew McDonald, Australia’s coach, in a press conference ahead of the Boxing Day Test match, confirmed that 19-year-old Sam Konstas would be part of Australia’s playing XI. What stands out about the young batter is that he is as confident as can be.

A day earlier, in the press conference that he addressed, he was faced with a flurry of questions about facing the Indian bowling lineup and debuting in front of a packed MCG. To which Konstas replied: “I think it’s just another day for me.”

Konstas consolidated his confidence with a solid display of batting in the nets two days ahead of the Test match. But what stood out was the fact that Konstas wasn’t put to bat in the nets where the prime bowlers – Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins – were bowling with the new ball. Instead, he was taking throw-downs and faced Scott Boland, Josh Hazlewood’s replacement for the remainder of the series. In the other net, Konstas also faced Sean Abbott, again with the old ball.

“Konstas has been very similar to what he has been on the outside,” said McDonald. “Composed, relaxed, knows his game. He has displayed an array of shots and the ability to put pressure back onto the opponents. We’re really excited for him.”

Although Konstas has looked solid in the nets, there’s always something to ponder, and in this case, why didn’t he face the new ball? Apart from the traditional drives and defence, Konstas could be seen slogging in the nets as well.

As the series stands level at 1-1, the anticipation has reached new heights. Konstas, with his cheeky remarks, has quickly become one of the most-talked-of debuts in recent times. Despite the pressure because of Australia’s top-order troubles, he remains composed and is backing himself to play fearless cricket.
