Festive spirit in full swing on Christmas Day at MCG

The festive spirit was in full swing at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), on Christmas Day, as the Australian cricketers spent some time with their families ahead of the Boxing Day Test. The iconic venue, known for hosting some of the most memorable moments in the history of cricket, became a heartwarming backdrop.

It was a day filled with laughter, joy, and camaraderie among the players and their loved ones. Mitchell Marsh, accompanied by his wife Greta and their newborn daughter, Olive, shared a touching moment as they strolled together on the pitch. Marsh was not the only one enjoying quality time with family. Fellow players, Marnus Labuschagne, Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon,and Alex Carey were also spotted playing with their children on the field.

Josh Inglis, who was once again not picked in the playing XI, spent his Christmas Day with his partner, Megan, and their son, Oscar, making the most of the festive occasion. Perth Scorchers pacer, Jhye Richardson, a surprise inclusion in the squad as a reserve bowler, joined the celebrations in Melbourne, further adding to the warmth of the gathering.

A special moment was also shared by Smith and his father, Peter, as they were seen inspecting the MCG wicket; a sight that highlighted the deep connection the players have with the historic ground.

Rising star Sam Konstas, who is set to become one of the youngest Australians to debut in Test cricket, was also present with his family.  Andrew McDonald’s son, Ollie, donned the pads and faced throwdowns alongside Travis Head, who in turn successfully passed a fitness test after recovering from a quad injury.

Captain, Pat Cummins reflected on the significance of the Christmas gathering, describing it as a cherished tradition. “We spend probably more time on the road than we do at home, so this is kind of the big extended family,” he explained.

He added that the atmosphere was lively, with around 30 to 40 kids running around, creating a joyful and chaotic scene. Although not all partners could travel, it provided a rare opportunity for the players and their loved ones to come together and celebrate.

The festivities included Christmas presents for the kids, followed by a team lunch. Meanwhile, India, their Boxing Day opponents, chose to take a quieter approach, completing media commitments early and focusing on their preparations for the upcoming clash.
