South Africa have suffered a big setback ahead of this year’s Champions Trophy, with fast bowler Anrich Nortje ruled out due to a back injury. The 31-year-old underwent scans on Monday afternoon, which confirmed the severity of the injury, also sidelining him from the ongoing SA20 tournament.

Nortje’s inclusion was a key highlight of South Africa’s squad announcement on January 13, alongside the return of Lungi Ngidi. During the squad announcement, Proteas white-ball coach Rob Walter backed Nortje to be fit in time for the eight-team tournament. However, just 48 hours later, a CSA statement confirmed that the scans revealed the injury would prevent Nortje from participating in the Champions Trophy.

With a long history of injuries, Nortje opted out of playing Tests last season to focus on strengthening his often-injured body. Last month, he was set to make a highly anticipated return against Pakistan but was sidelined again due to a toe injury.

Injuries have persistently disrupted Nortje’s international career. This marks the third ICC 50-over tournament he will miss due to injury. He previously sat out the 2019 edition with a broken thumb and the 2023 tournament due to a suspected stress fracture.

According to a CSA statement, a replacement for Nortje will be announced soon. Gerald Coetzee is currently the leading candidate to take his place. The 24-year-old was also Nortje’s replacement during the last World Cup in India, where he excelled as South Africa’s top wicket-taker.

Another contender for the spot is 18-year-old Kwena Maphaka, who has drawn attention for his ability to consistently bowl at speeds exceeding 140 kph since making his international debut.

South Africa are set to kick off their ICC Champions Trophy campaign on February 21 against Afghanistan.
