Indian shuttlers had a reasonably good start on day 1 at the Indonesia Masters in Jakarta. However, Day 2 turned out to be way more challenging, with Lakshya Sen and mixed doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Crasto emerging as the sole winners of the day among the Indian contingent.
Indian badminton fans had their eyes peeled on seventh-seeded PV Sindhu who exited India Open 2025 after a close quarter-final match against fifth-seeded Gregoria Tunjung. Following a long injury layoff, Sindhu took the loss in her stride and stated that she was focused on the positives.
However, Sindhu’s hopes ended early as she lost against Vietnam’s T.L Ngyuen. The Indian shuttler initially took control of the match (20-14), until Nguyen turned the tables and took the game point away, and won the match in straight sets – 22-20, 21-12.
On a more positive note, India’s mixed-doubles pair of Kapila-Crasto won their round of 32 match against Indonesia’s I. Jamil-A. Maulana 21-18, 21-14. Whereas, Lakshya who had a disappointing end to his India Open campaign beat Japan’s Takuma Obayashi in straight sets to advance to the next round,. The scoreline was 21-9, 21-14.
Meanwhile, Men’s singles shuttler Kiran George who caused an upset at the India Open, after beating World No. 17 Alex Lanier, faced an early exit as he lost out to Korea’s Jeon H.J 12-21, 10-21. Ayush Shetty also failed to qualify for the next round after being defeated by China’s Shi Yu Qi 21-19,21-19 in a closely contested game.
Tanya Hemanth also lost her round of 32 match – 14-21, 11-21 – against Thailand’s R Intanon. Young shuttler Priyanshu Rajawat too crashed out in the first round after losing against Japan’s K Naraoka 14-21, 21-18, 18-21.
Overall, it was a disappointing day for the Indian contingent. Heading into the round of 16 matches, Indian shuttlers will look to make a comeback in the tournament.
