Trisha and Vaishnavi help India U19 start Super Six stage with emphatic win

Another game, another dominating performance from India’s U-19 girls, in the ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup in Kuala Lumpur, as they defeated Bangladesh by eight wickets. After conceding only 64 runs for eight wickets in 20 overs, India’s batters completed the chase quickly, starting the ‘Super Six’ stage with an emphatic win.

Vaishnavi Sharma was named Player of the Match for her outstanding performance. After winning the toss, Niki Prasad chose to bowl first. The pacers, Shabnam Shakil and Joshitha VJ gave a solid start by picking up early wickets. After four overs, Bangladesh were in trouble, losing three wickets for just nine runs.

Then, the spinners took control, with Vaishnavi Sharma standing out. She stuck to her basic wicket-to-wicket line and length and was rewarded with three wickets for just 15 runs in four overs. Bangladesh’s captain, Sumaiya Akter (21* off 29), remained not out, while Jannatul Maoua put up a fight, scoring 14 off 20.

Bangladesh batted through their full 20 overs, finishing with 64 runs for the loss of eight wickets. In reply, Gongadi Trisha continued where she left off in the previous game. She unleashed a flurry of shots, scoring 40 runs off 31 balls, including eight boundaries. It was a disappointing outing for G Kamalini, who managed only three runs.

However, skipper Niki (5* off two balls) and Sanika Chalke (11* off five balls) remained not out, completing the chase in just 7.1 overs with eight wickets in hand. During the post-match presentation, Player of the Match Vaishnavi highlighted the importance of the early wickets taken by the pace duo in every game.

She emphasised that it helped her and the other spinners take control of the innings and eased the pressure going into the later stages. With this win, India sits atop their group standings, in the Super Six stage, with six points and a massive net run rate of +6.009. India’s next match is against Scotland on January 28.

Brief score: Bangaldesh-W 64/8 in 20 overs (Sumaiya Akter 21*; Vaishnavi Sharma 3/15) lost to India-W 66/2 in 7.1 overs (Gongadi Trisha 40; Habiba Islam 1/15) by eight wickets.
