Mohammedan Sporting Club have officially announced the departure of Head Coach Andrey Chernyshov, marking the end of a remarkable chapter in the club’s history. In an official press release, the club confirmed that Mehrajuddin Wadoo has been appointed as the interim boss for the remainder of the season.
Since his appointment, the Russian tactician had played a pivotal role in Mohammedan Sporting’s resurgence. Under his leadership, the Black-and-White Brigade secured multiple trophies, including back-to-back Calcutta Football League titles. He also guided the team to the 2021 Durand Cup final and a runner-up finish in the I-League 2021-22. His tenure culminated in Mohammedan’s historic I-League triumph in the 2023-24 season, securing the club’s long-awaited promotion to the Indian Super League (ISL).
Chernyshov quickly became a fan favourite, not only for the silverware he delivered but also for the attractive and dynamic style of football his team played. His tactical approach and vision earned admiration from supporters, making Mohammedan SC’s ISL debut even more anticipated.
However, things took a drastic turn after the club’s entry into the ISL. Mohammedan SC struggled to find form, managing to win only two games thus far in the league. On-field difficulties were further compounded by off-field controversies, including salary disputes and investor conflicts related to share transfers. These ongoing issues created significant turmoil within the club.
Amidst the crisis, Chernyshov decided to take a break and flew to Russia before the highly anticipated Kolkata derby against Mohun Bagan Super Giant, temporarily handing over coaching duties to Wadoo. At the time, he assured the club he would return in a week. However, after further discussions with the management, he ultimately decided to part ways with the club by mutual consent.
In a joint press release, Mohammedan Sporting Club, along with its investors Bunker Hill and Shrachi Sports, expressed their appreciation for Chernyshov’s contributions. “It is never easy to say goodbye, especially to someone who has given so much to this club,” it said. “Coach Chernyshov’s impact goes beyond results—he has shaped the team’s identity, elevated its ambitions, and won the hearts of the MSC family. He will always be a cherished member of Mohammedan SC, and his legacy will continue to inspire the club for years to come.”
With Wadoo now at the helm, Mohammedan SC will look to make amends in their remaining ISL fixtures.
