Pep Guardiola, Manchester City’s manager, lashed out at a minority of Manchester United fans after the derby at Old Trafford on Sunday, accusing them of a ‘lack of class’ after loud chants about Claire Rowlands, the mother of Phil Foden. Foden, who had another disappointing game, was substituted after 57 minutes of the 0-0 stalemate.

“Lack of class,” said an angry Guardiola after the game. “But it’s not United, it’s the people, you know? We are so exposed, people who are on the screen in world football – managers, owners, and football players especially.

“It’s a lack of integrity, class, and they should be ashamed.”  – Pep Guardiola

“Honestly, I don’t understand the mind of the people involving the mum of Phil. It’s a lack of integrity, class, and they should be ashamed.”

Foden’s mother was arrested last year for drunk and disorderly behaviour on a night out, while the player himself has been a target for rival fans because of his local connections.

Foden was the Premier League Player of the Season in 2023-24, when he scored 19 league goals, and 27 in all competitions. His failure to replicate that form – he has just 10 goals this season, including 7 in the league – has been a major factor in City’s unexpectedly poor season.
