Devon Conway became the second player to be retired out in the ongoing IPL 2025, following Mumbai Indians’ (MI) Tilak Verma. This happened during the high-scoring clash between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Mullanpur stadium.

Chasing a big target of 219, Conway opened the innings for CSK. Despite a slow start, the New Zealand batter eventually found his rhythm and scored a half-century. But as the innings moved forward, he started to look uncomfortable at the crease. In the 18th over, Conway walked off after scoring 69 off 49 balls. Ravindra Jadeja replaced him at the crease. This move surprised many, as Conway was set and nearing the final overs of the chase. However, CSK eventually fell short by 18 runs.

MI’s Tilak Varma was retired out vs LSG earlier in the IPL 2025

This wasn’t the first instance of a tactical ‘retired out’ in IPL 2025. Earlier in the season, MI made a similar decision against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Tilak Verma was retired out while chasing, and Mitchell Santner was sent in. That decision drew criticism from fans. Head coach Mahela Jayawardene and captain Hardik Pandya were questioned by many MI supporters for that move.

After CSK’s match, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad explained the thought process behind the decision to retire Conway. Speaking at the post-match presentation, he said: “He (Conway) is more of a timer of the ball, very useful up the order. When you have Jaddu, known for that (finishing) role particularly, you expect that. When you know the batter is struggling… initially he (Conway) was still timing it well. We waited and waited until (he started struggling).”
