Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s efforts went in vain as Punjab Kings (PBKS) beat Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 18 runs in Chandigarh on April 8. PBKS posted a huge total of 219/6 in their 20 overs. Chasing 220, CSK started well as their openers Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway put on a 61-run stand for the first wicket. Then, Shivam Dube and Conway added 89 runs off 51 balls, putting CSK in a position from where they could dream of winning the match.

Then came the old warhorse, MS Dhoni. He played a brilliant knock of 27 runs off 12 balls at a strike rate of 225. His innings included one four and three sixes, and we caught glimpses of the vintage Dhoni in those towering hits. But Dhoni was dismissed on the first ball of the 20th over, and with his departure, CSK’s hopes faded.

MS Dhoni has now 103 runs in five games in the IPL 2025

Today, When Dhoni came in, CSK needed 69 off 25 balls. He looked in good touch, played with a certain intent and hence, hopes were there this might be the match that Dhoni would snatch away from PBKS’s grasp. But, in the end, he failed to win it singlehandedly and it seemed once again, that required run rate proved to be a bit too much. The task was too steep for even him to pull off singlehandedly.

This marked CSK’s fourth consecutive loss, leaving them languishing in ninth position on the points table. On the other hand, PBKS registered their third win in four matches, moving up to fourth place. CSK will need to rethink their strategies quickly, or it could be game over for them in this edition of the IPL.
