When Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) signed Désiré Doué from Rennes in a deal worth around €50 million last summer, it made few headlines. The noise around PSG was all about Kylian Mbappe’s departure to Real Madrid. But now, as PSG close in on a semi-final spot in the UEFA Champions League, having already clinched the Ligue 1 title, that’s looking like money well spent.

Doué scored a spectacular equaliser against Aston Villa at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night, cutting in from the left and arcing a beautiful right-footed curler that Emiliano Martinez could only watch sail past him and into the net. It was his 12th goal of the season, and his third in Europe’s premier club competition.

A graduate of Rennes’ famous academy, which he joined at the age of 5, Doué can play in a variety of positions across the forward line and as an attacking midfielder. Though only 19, he can more than hold his own physically, and his ball control and acceleration are superb. Even in a team boasting the talents of Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, he has quickly become a player to be feared.

Born to an Ivorian father and a French mother, Doué was part of the team that lost the Olympic final to Spain in Paris last summer. He was recently called up by France against Croatia, and there will doubtless be more headlines before the season is over.
