Manchester United are currently having one of their worst seasons in the English Premier League (EPL). They are 13th in the table with 38 points from 31 games. With seven matches left, United fans will be hoping to end this season quickly and look forward to a fresh start next year.
However, reports suggest that the club has already started planning for next season. Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap is said to be one of their top targets.
Delap has been impressive in a struggling Ipswich Town side. In 30 Premier League matches this season, he has scored 12 goals and provided two assists. But Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich are fighting to avoid relegation. They are currently 18th in the table with just 20 points from 31 games, 12 points behind 17th-placed Wolves with seven games to go. If they go down, it might actually help Manchester United.
How can Manchester United get Liam Delap for a release clause of £30m?
According to The Guardian, if Ipswich Town are relegated this season, then Manchester United—or any other interested club—can sign Delap for a £30m release clause. Ipswich signed him from Manchester City for £15m plus £5m in add-ons after their promotion. He has been a key player for them, but City included a 20% sell-on clause in the deal.
If Ipswich drop out of the top flight, Delap’s release clause will reportedly fall to £30m. That would give clubs like United and Chelsea a big boost in their pursuit of the young England Under-21 striker.
Right now, Manchester City are not expected to activate their buyback clause. Delap is also said to be looking for regular first-team football. Exciting weeks lie ahead as the Premier League season nears its end. Both Manchester United and Chelsea are likely to stay in the race for Delap until the very end.
