In Kolkata, before all the noise over the re-appointment of MS Dhoni as the captain of Chennai Super Kings started happening, Sourav Ganguly said he should be the skipper of the franchise. In Chennai, soon after, Stephen Fleming said Dhoni would be the CSK captain for the remainder of IPL 2025.

“If MS Dhoni has to play for CSK, he must be captain of CSK. Because MS Dhoni the captain is a different beast,” Ganguly said at a promotional event on Thursday.

In Chennai, as CSK head coach Fleming attended the pre-match press conference, with his team playing against Kolkata Knight Riders at Chepauk on Friday, he confirmed that Ruturaj Gaikwad had been ruled out of this year’s IPL due to a fracture in his right elbow. Dhoni, who relinquished CSK captaincy last term, making Gaikwad the chosen one, will assume the leadership role again.

It’s an unfortunate turn of events for Gaikwad, who suffered the injury during CSK’s match against Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati. As Fleming said, he played through the pain in the next two matches against Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings. But, an MRI revealed a fracture.

Ganguly, obviously, was unaware of Gaikwad’s misfortune. His assessment was purely based on cricket. The question to him was whether Dhoni could roll back the years. “He (Dhoni) still can hit sixes. We saw that the other day,” said the former India captain.

“Obviously, he is 43 years old and we don’t expect to see the MS Dhoni, what I saw in 2005. That’s quite natural. But I think he still got the power to clear (the boundary). I don’t know what he has on his mind. I don’t know what CSK is thinking. I saw him play the other day and he did hit a few sixes. And I think with all his experience, all what he’s achieved, he understands the game as good as anybody. And he will do what is right for CSK.”
