Yash Thakur thought he had Abhishek Sharma, when he dismissed him off a no-ball, when the batter was on 28. Yuzvendra Chahal dropped him off his own bowling when he was on 56. That was all the luck Abhishek needed to unleash a jaw-dropping knock of 141 off just 55 balls.
His innings, laced with 14 fours and 10 sixes, made the mountain-like target of 246 look surprisingly easy in the end. It was the second-highest successful run chase in IPL history, as Sunrisers Hyderabad won by eight wickets in a run-fest in Hyderabad that saw nearly 500 runs scored. Abhishek’s innings outshone many, but notably that of Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer, whose 82 had earlier powered his side to 245.
On a day when SRH needed their openers the most, they delivered. Facing a mammoth target, the explosive pair of Abhishek and Travis Head rose to the occasion. They needed to survive the Powerplay and they didn’t just do that, but went berserk, smashing 83 runs in the first six overs.
Abhishek was the chief aggressor from the outset. The pair never took their foot off the pedal. PBKS had their chances but failed to capitalise. It was one-way traffic as everything went in SRH’s favour, with both openers showcasing their full range of strokes. Their 171-run partnership all but ended the contest. PBKS bowlers looked helpless and out of ideas, especially with Lockie Ferguson’s injury weakening their attack.
By the time Abhishek was dismissed, SRH were well ahead in the chase. Heinrich Klaasen and Ishan Kishan calmly finished things off, sealing a memorable win for the home side.
Iyer starred with the bat in the first innings
Going against the norm, Iyer chose to bat after winning the toss, and the decision paid off. The in-form opening duo of Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh launched a blistering assault, propelling PBKS to 50 in just three overs. Prabhsimran took the lead early, dispatching Mohammed Shami — who ended up with the most expensive bowling figures by an Indian in IPL history — for three boundaries. Priyansh then joined the carnage, smashing Pat Cummins for a six and two fours, before hammering Shami for back-to-back sixes and a four. Prabhsimran followed it up with a flicked six of his own.

SRH finally breathed a sigh of relief when Harshal Patel broke the opening stand by removing Priyansh, followed by debutant Eshan Malinga dismissing Prabhsimran in the seventh over. With the platform laid, Iyer and Nehal Wadhera took charge through the middle overs with a 73-run partnership.
Though the tempo dipped slightly after the powerplay, PBKS never lost control. Iyer brought up his half-century with a boundary off Shami, while Wadhera played his part with clever strokes to keep the scoreboard moving. However, PBKS suffered a mini-collapse — Malinga nailed a yorker to dismiss Wadhera, and Harshal Patel trapped Shashank Singh leg-before via DRS, leaving Punjab at 168 for four in the 15th over.
The momentum wavered briefly, and Harshal struck again in the 18th over, removing Glenn Maxwell and the well-set Iyer. Just when SRH thought they had regained control, Marcus Stoinis powered PBKS close to 250 with a brutal final over, launching four sixes off Shami to cap off a stunning batting display.
