Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni created history by becoming the oldest captain to win the Player of the Match award in the IPL. At 43, Dhoni rolled back the years with a blistering cameo of 26 off just 11 balls, guiding CSK to a five-wicket victory in a 167-run chase against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

With 56 needed off the final five overs, CSK were under pressure. Shivam Dube was struggling to find the boundary, eventually finishing on 43 off 37 deliveries. Dhoni’s timely intervention not only swung the momentum with the bat but also showcased his brilliance behind the stumps. He contributed with a sharp stumping, a catch, and a direct hit — all while keeping the gloves on.

It was a complete performance from the CSK captain, though he admitted being surprised at receiving the award. “Even today I was like — why are they giving me the award? Noor bowled really well,” Dhoni said in the post-match presentation, praising the Afghan spinner for his economical spell.

Batting unit needs to do better: Dhoni

Dhoni also addressed the need for improvement in CSK’s batting department. “As a bowling unit we’ve done well. As a batting unit, we can do better. Roles and responsibilities — that’s what we talk about. If you get off to a good start, and you’re someone who can play through the innings, then why not,” he added.

The win in Lucknow marked CSK’s second of the season, a much-needed boost as they aim to regain form in the ongoing tournament.
