Two goals in three crazy second-half minutes were the difference as Inter Milan withstood wave after wave of Bayern Munich attacks in the closing stages to hold on for a 2-2 draw at the San Siro. Their 4-3 aggregate win means they now face Barcelona in the semi final. Bayern, for whom two Englishmen – Harry Kane and Eric Dier – scored the goals, were the better team on the night, but as in Munich, Inter took their chances.
Harry Kane had given the Bavarians a 52nd minute lead, with a fine angled finish through Federico Dimarco’s legs, but the advantage lasted less than six minutes. Simone Inzaghi’s Inter are a real threat with their set pieces, and two of them transformed the game.
“It’s a wonderful evening, experienced at our stadium, in front of our fans, against a very strong team,” said Inzaghi
First, a weak attempted clearance from Joshua Kimmich was slammed back into the goal by Lautaro Martinez, and then Benjamin Pavard – who spent four seasons with Bayern (2019-23) – delivered a bullet header past Jonas Urbig from a corner. A stunned Bayern kept plugging away, and Dier restored parity with a loopy header from an impossible angle in the 76th minute. But despite bringing on more attacking options in Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman, the winner they craved never came.
“It’s a wonderful evening, experienced at our stadium, in front of our fans, against a very strong team,” said Inzaghi afterwards. “We had to play two great matches, giving everything we had. The boys were fantastic – this is a victory to share with the entire Inter family. We move forward in this long season that’s giving us so many emotions.”
