Delhi Capitals (DC) pace ace Mitchell Starc held his nerve and executed his plans to perfection, helping his team clinch a thrilling win over Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the first Super Over of the IPL 2025 season.
With just nine runs needed off the final over, Starc nailed his yorkers and gave the RR batters no room to capitalise. Earlier, he had dismissed a well-set Nitish Rana, who had scored 51, with a superb delivery in his second-last over. Returning for the Super Over, the left-arm pacer kept things tight, conceding only five runs in the first three deliveries, with Shimron Hetmyer managing a boundary. A no-ball gave RR some hope, and Riyan Parag smacked a four off it, but chaos followed as both Parag and Yashasvi Jaiswal were run out in quick succession.
Chasing 12 in the Super Over, KL Rahul and Tristan Stubbs made light work of the target, finishing the game in just four balls.
Backed my plans and execution: Starc
“Just backed my execution, running in with a clear plan. Sometimes it comes off, a bit of luck goes a long way,” said Starc at the post-match presentation. “I’ve played long enough for everyone to know what I’d do, but if I execute, I know I’ll get by. Was a bit of a surprise to see left-handers walk in against my angle, especially with the ball tailing back in.”
After a tough defeat against Mumbai Indians, the Capitals will take plenty of confidence from this dramatic win over the Royals.
