Reports about Abhishek Nayar’s contract as Team India’s assistant coach being terminated by the BCCI have been all over social media in the last few days. Now, he has rejoined Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as an assistant coach. On Friday, KKR spinner Varun Chakaravarthy shared a story that hinted at this reunion.
Nayar, who was appointed to Gautam Gambhir’s support staff in the Indian team, was chosen because of his strong coaching record, especially with KKR. KKR did not waste any time and brought him back as an assistant coach. In a social media post, KKR announced: “Welcome Back Home, Abhishek Nayar.”
Nayar began his coaching career with KKR in 2018. He played a key role in the team’s success by scouting talented domestic players. He helped groom many young cricketers and built strong bonds with players like Varun Chakaravarthy, Harshit Rana, Shubman Gill, and Venkatesh Iyer.

Abhishek Nayar had an eight-month stint as Team India’s assistant coach
During his previous time as KKR’s assistant coach, the team reached the final in the 14th edition of the IPL. Venkatesh Iyer played a key role in the team’s turnaround when the season resumed. In the 17th edition of the IPL in 2024, KKR won the title under Gautam Gambhir’s leadership, with Nayar again serving as assistant coach.
Ahead of KKR’s next match against Gujarat Titans (GT), Nayar was already seen at the team’s practice session today. He was involved in talks with the coaching staff, especially Chandrakant Pandit.
Nayar’s time with the Indian team was not very successful. The coaching group faced criticism after India’s poor performances, which included a 3-0 whitewash in the home Test series against New Zealand and a 3-1 series loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.
