Leeds United, who were relegated from the English Premier League (EPL) in 2022-23, returned to the top tier in style with a 6-0 thrashing of Stoke City in an Easter Monday game in the EFL Championship. A few hours later, Burnley also joined them by beating third-placed Sheffiled United 2-1 at Turf Moor. A Josh Brownhill double either side of a Thomas Cannon strike for United ensured that Scott Parker’s Burnley would also take one of the two automatic promotion slots.

Leeds, one of England’s leading clubs in the 1960s and 1970s, last won the top-flight title in 1991-92

For Leeds, Joel Piroe, their Dutch striker, scored four times in the first half, against a Stoke team that were EPL regulars once in the Tony Pulis years. Leeds were promoted back in 2020, under the stewardship of Marcelo Bielsa, but went back down in their third season. The challenge for Daniel Farke, who previously achieved promotion with Norwich City, is to bridge what is now a yawning chasm between the EPL and the second-tier Championship. This season, all three promoted teams – Southampton, Leicester City and Ipswich – are going straight back down.

Leeds, one of England’s leading clubs in the 1960s and 1970s, last won the top-flight title in 1991-92, and have scored 89 goals in their 44 Championship games so far. Burnley’s strength has been their defence, which has conceded just 15 goals all season. Sheffield United and Sunderland are guaranteed two of the four play-off places, with Bristol City (67 points), Coventry City (66), Middlesbrough (63), Millwall (63) and Blackburn Rovers (62) locked in a five-way battle for the last two places. Of those, only Millwall and Blackburn won on Monday.
