It was a decent debut for 21-year-old South African batter Dewald Brevis, who played his first match for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the ongoing IPL 2025 clash in Chennai. Coming in at a crucial juncture after CSK lost their top-order cheaply, Brevis was sent in at number five, joining Ravindra Jadeja in the middle. Despite the pressure, the young Protea batter looked composed and confident from the moment he took guard.

Brevis delivered a standout performance, scoring 42 off just 25 balls at an impressive strike rate of 168.00. His quickfire knock included four sixes and one boundary, making him the highest run-scorer for CSK in the innings. While most CSK batters struggled against a sharp and disciplined Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) bowling attack, Brevis stood out with his clean hitting and calm presence at the crease.

Dewald Brevis has played for the Mumbai Indians earlier in the IPL

Although this wasn’t his IPL debut—having previously played for the Mumbai Indians—this was his first appearance for CSK. He joined the franchise as a replacement for Gurjapneet Singh. During his stint with the Mumbai Indians, Brevis had shown flashes of brilliance. In his debut IPL season in 2022, he scored 161 runs in seven matches. However, he had a limited role in the 2024 season, where he featured in just three games and scored 69 runs.

In today’s match, Brevis built a crucial 40-run partnership with Shivam Dube for the fifth wicket. However, just when he looked set to explode, Harshal Patel bowled a slower delivery that led to his dismissal. Brevis tried to clear the long-off boundary with a flat hit, but Kamindu Mendis pulled off a sensational catch that ended his promising innings.
