A breathtaking display of attacking football saw Liverpool thrash Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 to clinch a record-equalling 20th top-flight title, now the English Premier League (EPL), with four games to spare. Coming into the game needing just a point, Liverpool comfortably took all three after Dominic Solanke, once of Liverpool, had given Spurs a shock lead.

That goal, a towering header from a corner in the 12th minute, temporarily silenced the raucous Anfield crowd, but they were roaring again on 16 minutes when Mohamed Salah slid Dominic Szoboszlai through to square the ball for Luis Diaz to tap home. That settled the nerves, and eight minutes later, Tottenham’s attempt to play out from the back saw the ball stolen by Ryan Gravenberch before Alexis Mac Allister lashed home with his left foot.

Ten minutes later, Cody Gakpo kept his cool and slotted home from inside the box, and Liverpool went into half-time comfortably ahead. Ange Postecoglou rang the changes, bringing on players like Dejan Kulusevski, who had been reset, keeping the Europa League semifinal in mind.

It made no difference. After other opportunities had been squandered, Salah, who hadn’t scored in the league since signing his new contract, cut in from the right and beat Guglielmo Vicario at his near post. When Destiny Udogie put it into his own net with Salah lurking six minutes later, it summed up another disastrous afternoon for Tottenham.

Arne Slot, who decided not to take up the Tottenham job before the 2023-24 season, emulated Matt McQueen in 1922-23, Joe Fagan (1983-84) and Kenny Dalglish (1985-86) by winning the title in his first year in charge. With a 15-point gap to second-placed Arsenal, who would dare say there won’t be more?
