Antonio Rudiger has been hit with a six-game ban in the aftermath of the disgraceful scenes towards the end of last Saturday’s Copa del Rey final between Barcelona and Real Madrid. Rudiger had already been substituted with an injury, but he flung the object in the direction of Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea, the referee, after the Madrid bench were incensed by a foul given against Kylian Mbappe.
The ban will have little practical impact, since it rules Rudiger out for the last five matches of this LaLiga season and the first one in 2025-26. He is already sidelined after undergoing surgery for a partial meniscus tear, and looks set to miss the Club World Cup in June-July.
Ferland Mendy is out for the foreseeable future with a hamstring problem
Though Jude Bellingham’s red card for aggressive behaviour towards the match officials was rescinded, there was further bad news for Real on the injury front. Ferland Mendy is out for the foreseeable future with a hamstring problem, while David Alaba’s career could well be over after yet another knee injury.
