Team India are all set to play a five-match Test series in England against England right after the conclusion of the ongoing IPL 2025. However, which players will make the squad remains uncertain, especially after a disappointing Test series defeat against Australia down under.
Recently, India’s experienced batter Cheteshwar Pujara had an exclusive conversation with RevSportz’s Editor-in-Chief, Boria Mazumdar. In that episode of ‘Backstage with Boria’, Pujara spoke about the future of Test cricket and the BCCI’s decision to ask players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to play domestic cricket.
When asked whether it is a concern that many young players today are more focused on playing in the IPL rather than Test cricket, Pujara said: “With the kind of money IPL has to offer, I do not blame them. The choice and inclination is very obvious when 8-9 crores in IPL for two months is compared with 3-4 crores [for a year] in Test cricket.”
“I don’t know how much domestic cricket players like Virat and Rohit want to play.” – Cheteshwar Pujara
On the Board’s decision to ask Kohli and Rohit to play domestic cricket, Pujara sounded hopeful and said it could help them stay connected to the game. “It will help the players of the Test squad to be in touch with the game. But one who is playing all three formats would also need to balance it out and find a break in between. So, I don’t know how much domestic cricket players like Virat and Rohit want to play. It’s up to them, but for young players, I genuinely feel domestic cricket would help them in the future when playing Test format.” Pujara concluded.
Both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were seen playing for their respective states in the Ranji Trophy recently before their successful Champions Trophy campaign.
