Rajasthan Royals (RR) are facing Mumbai Indians (MI) today in the 50th match of the ongoing IPL 2025 in Jaipur. After winning the toss, RR chose to bowl first. During the MI innings, a photo went viral on social media showing former England Men’s Football team manager and player, Gareth Southgate, enjoying the match while wearing an RR jersey.
Who is Gareth Southgate?
Sir Gareth Southgate is a former England professional football player and manager. He played as both a defender and a midfielder. After spending his youth career at clubs like Southampton and Crystal Palace, he went on to make 503 senior club appearances across three clubs—Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, and Middlesbrough. Southgate represented England 57 times, scoring two goals.
He later managed the England U-21 team from 2013 to 2016, before taking over as the senior England Men’s Football team manager from 2016 to 2024. Under his leadership, England finished third in the 2018–19 UEFA Nations League. The team were runners-up in both the UEFA Euro 2020 and Euro 2024 tournaments. He ended his managerial career stint with England with a win percentage of 59.80, recording 61 wins, 24 draws, and 17 losses in 102 matches.
However, Southgate has always been a passionate cricket fan. During the Ashes 2023, he expressed his admiration for the England cricket team’s mindset. Speaking to the media, Southgate said: “I’m a big cricket fan and it’s something that is hugely exciting to watch at the moment. You know their mindset has been a big thing, but they’ve also got a lot of world-class players. You know, we’ve got quite a few players I think would get in a World XI. So, the standard is also very good.”
