Punjab Kings (PBKS) have brought in Australian cricketer Mitch Owen as a replacement for Glenn Maxwell, who has been ruled out of the remainder of the IPL 2025 due to a finger injury.
Owen, who was not picked in the initial auction, joins the franchise for a fee of Rs 3 crore. The all-rounder was recently seen in action for Peshawar Zalmi in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), under the leadership of Babar Azam. Having featured in seven matches in the PSL, Owen will now head to India for his debut stint in the IPL.
The Tasmanian cricketer made headlines during the previous Big Bash League (BBL) season, where he scored a blazing 100 off just 39 deliveries. His explosive knock was instrumental in Hobart Hurricanes lifting their maiden BBL title in the 14th edition of the tournament.
Big-hitting Owen joins PBKS
Owen ended BBL 14 as the leading run-scorer, amassing 452 runs in 11 matches, including two centuries. His outstanding performance played a crucial role in the Hurricanes’ championship win.
His rise in Australian cricket began with a state contract from Tasmania in 2020, following a standout performance in the 2019–20 Under-19 National Championships, where he scored 415 runs at an average of 60.
Punjab Kings have four matches left in the group stage and remain in contention for a playoff spot. Their next fixture is set to take place in Dharamsala against the Lucknow Super Giants.
